Homicide detectives have learned that at 8:35 p.m. deputies from Marina Del Rey Station responded to a customer creating a disturbance call at a business located in the 5000 block of West Slauson Avenue, Unincorporated Los Angeles.  Deputies talked to the suspect and escorted him out of the location.

At 10:45 p.m. deputies received a call to return to the business, the same male adult had returned and was again causing a disturbance at the location.  When deputies arrived they saw the suspect outside displaying erratic behavior.  The suspect was uncooperative and became aggressive towards the deputies.  One of the deputy’s tased the suspect with no affect.  The suspect began to walk away.  The deputies followed the suspect, a short distance, giving him orders that he did not comply with.  The suspect remained uncooperative and removed a tethered weapon from his backpack and began to swing it over his head.

The deputy attempted to taser the suspect again with no affect.  The suspect continued to swing the weapon over his head and aggressively move towards one of the deputies.  A deputy-involved shooting then took place.  The suspect was struck at least once in the upper torso.

The suspect was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

No deputies were injured.

The suspect is a male, Black approximately 40 years-old.

There is no additional information at this time, and the investigation is on-going.

Whenever a Deputy Involved Shooting occurs involving Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputies and it results in the wounding of a suspect, multiple independent investigations immediately begin at the scene. These include separate investigations by the Sheriff's Homicide Bureau and Internal Affairs Bureau. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department immediately notifies the Office of the Inspector General who sends a representative to the incident scene and provides independent oversight throughout the investigative process. The mission of the Office of Inspector General is to provide strong, independent and effective oversight of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and to ensure transparent, accountable and constitutional policing for the County of Los Angeles. The Critical Incident Review panel convenes to perform a preliminary risk management analysis of the shooting. This panel is comprised of the concerned chief and unit commander, risk management and training personnel, the chairperson of the Executive Force Review Committee, and a representative from the Office of the Los Angeles County Counsel. Every aspect of a Deputy-Involved shooting is ultimately evaluated by the Sheriff’s Executive Force Review Committee, which determines whether there are any policy, tactical, supervisory, or training violations or concerns. The Office of the Los Angeles County District Attorney also participates in the investigatory process and conducts a legal analysis of the shooting
