UPDATE #LASD - Homicide Detectives Investigating Deputy-Involved Shooting, 1500 blk of 91st St, unincorp Los Angeles

Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Homicide detectives are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deputy-involved shooting that occurred on Wednesday, April 12, 2017, at 1:07 A.M. in the 1500 block of 91st Street, unincorporated Los Angeles.

Homicide detectives learned Century Station deputies were dispatched to the location in response to a “Vehicle Burglary” call.

When deputies arrived at the location they saw the white Honda Accord described in the call parked with the trunk partially opened.  As they inspected the car for occupants they noticed a dark vehicle parked in the alley just south of their location with the brake lights on.  Believing the vehicle may have been involved in the burglary, the deputies contacted the driver and sole occupant of the car.

As they approached the driver, a male Black adult, they smelled what they believed to be marijuana coming from inside the vehicle and asked the driver to exit the car. The suspect refused and as one of the deputies held his arm to escort him out, he pulled away, reached for a handgun and pointed it at the deputies.

A deputy-involved shooting occurred and the suspect was fatally shot in the torso.  He was pronounced dead at the scene.

No deputies were injured.

The suspect’s handgun was recovered at the scene and his identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

It is unknown if the suspect was involved in the vehicle burglary.
