Napa Fire Department Encourages Americans to Get Ready During National Preparedness Month! More Info Here ->

Seventh annual NPM helps Americans take steps toward becoming prepared

The Napa City Fire Department is proud to be participating in the seventh annual National Preparedness Month (NPM) in September. Sponsored by FEMA’s Ready Campaign, NPM is a nationwide effort encouraging individuals, families, businesses, and communities to work together and take action to prepare for emergencies.

This year, NPM focuses on encouraging all Americans to take active steps toward getting involved and becoming prepared. Preparedness is everyone’s responsibility.

We have to work together, as a team, to ensure that individuals, families, and communities are ready. Individuals are encouraged to: make a family emergency plan; put together an emergency supply kit; be prepared to help your neighbor; and work as a team to keep everyone safe.

“During a large scale disaster, the professional responders will be overwhelmed” states Patrick Young, Public Education Specialist for the fire department. “In Napa Valley the ratio of responders to citizen is about 1:1000; this means during a disaster if you call 911, no one may be coming to help. This is why having a disaster kit prepared and having a plan is so important!”

One training option in Napa Valley is to attend a Community Emergency Response Team (C.E.R.T.) class. Classes are scheduled on ongoing bases and teach basic disaster response for lay people. The next class is tentatively scheduled for November 1, 2010. For information about classes go to www.napavalleycert.com

This is the second year NFD has participated in National Prevention Month.
