SUMMARY OF INCIDENT:
On July 12, 2012 at approximately 11:48 p.m., Benicia PD K9 Officer Kirk Keffer and his K9 partner “Bak” were on patrol in the City of Benicia. Ofcr. Keffer observed a vehicle fail to stop for a posted stop sign. Ofcr. Keffer stopped the 1996 Honda Civic and contacted the driver who was identified as a 17 year old juvenile male Benicia resident. Officer Keffer smelled an odor of marijuana emitting from the vehicle. He later utilized his K9 partner “Bak” to conduct a search of the vehicle. “Bak” located a small amount of marijuana that was packaged for sale. Ofcr. Keffer also located a loaded 45 caliber semi automatic pistol wrapped in a shirt on the back seat of the vehicle. The gun was later found to be reported stolen from the City of San Leandro. The juvenile male was arrested and later transported and booked into the Solano County Jail in Fairfield. Although this was a “routine traffic stop” that police officers make everyday, it clearly illustrates the potential danger this officer could have faced under different circumstances, said Lt. Frank Hartig.
