Benicia Police: Alert this morning for flaring & smoke from the Valero Refinery stacks. No danger to FF at this time

The Benicia Police Department issued an alert at approximately 8:00 am this morning that the Valero Refinery is experiencing a power outage that is causing flaring & smoke from the stacks. The Benicia Police Department issued a Tweet instructing Benicia residents and businesses downwind to evacuate and avoid the area.

Officials handling the emergency in Benicia have advised the Fairfield Fire Department that there is no reason to believe that residents outside of Benicia are in danger. According to a KCRA news meteorologist, winds in the Benicia area are currently at a steady 21 MPH and are coming on-shore from the west-south-west. That is good news because the wind direction doesn't lead directly to Fairfield, and a strong wind tends to dilute anything floating into the atmosphere.

Updates on events in Benicia will come from authorities in that jurisdiction. We will provide updates that affect Fairfield residents as we receive them.
