Update-Highway 12 Fire; The fire has been extinguished and traffic has been reopened in all directions.

Update:  The fire on Highway 12 near Pennsylvania Ave. has been extinguished. The Fire Department will remain at the scene for the next few hours performing mop-up.

Traffic in all directions on both Highway 12 and Pennsylvania Ave has been reopened. 


On June 1, 2017, at 5:04 pm the Fairfield Emergency Dispatch Center received a call from a passerby reporting a road-side grass fire on the north side of Highway 12, west of Pennsylvania Avenue. The cause of the fires in undetermined at this time. The Fairfield Fire Department responded and is currently working to contain the fire.

The fire, fueled by wind and grass, progressed in a northeasterly direction from Highway 12 and threatened the backyard fences of homes on James Street and an apartment community located at 201 Pennsylvania Avenue. The fire initially endangered the rear fence of the apartments, causing Fairfield Police Officers to spring into action to evacuate a handful of nearby apartments. The fire stopped just short of the fence line and no apartments or homes are currently in danger. No structures have been damaged.

Traffic has been shut down on Pennsylvania Avenue between Highway 12 and Woolner Avenue, as well as westbound Highway 12 between Pennsylvania Avenue and Beck Avenue. Eastbound Highway 12 is open at this time. Traffic is heavily congested in the vicinity, so please avoid the area if possible.
