Incident Summary:
On December 3, 2017 at approximately 10:06 PM an officer on patrol observed two vehicles stopped in the northbound lanes at the intersection Ely Blvd S. and Caulfield Ln.  The vehicles remained stopped side by side for an unusually extended period of time.  The officer then observed both of the vehicles revving their engines and simultaneously begin accelerating at a high rate of speed through the intersection northbound on Ely Blvd S.

Based on the officer’s observations it appeared that both of the drivers of the vehicles were engaged in an illegal speed contest.  The vehicles accelerated to approximately 50 MPH before the officer was able to overtake and stop both of the drivers in the area of Ely Blvd S. and Weaverly Dr.

The drivers of vehicles were both identified as 16 year old male juveniles from Petaluma.  One of the driver’s was determined to be operating a vehicle without a license.  Both of the drivers admitted to be involved in a street racer against the other.

Both juveniles were arrested for violations of 23019(c) PC, illegal speed contest, and one was additionally charged with 12500(a)VC, driving unlicensed.  Neither juvenile is being identified due to their age.

The Petaluma Police Department takes illegal speed contests and street racing seriously.  A vehicle is a deadly weapon if used recklessly. If you choose to drive recklessly, you could be jailed, have your vehicle impounded, be fatally injured, or take someone's life; perhaps, the life of someone you love, or your own.
